August 15, 2017
Dear Parents of Great Cardinal Students:
On August 21, many people in our country will experience a possibly once-in-a-lifetime event; a total solar eclipse. The eclipse will take a path across the United States and will be observable by many in its entirety from one coast to the other. Our teachers have taken this opportunity to teach all about this amazing astral event, including some students creating viewing tools and learning about the science behind the event. We will NOT be sending home glasses. We believe your children should be able to experience it with you at home. Therefore, Cardinal Charter Academy will dismiss at 12:00 for grades 1 and 2 and 12:15 for grades 3-8 in order to allow you to share this experience with your child(ren). As we’re sure you are aware, it is dangerous to stare at the sun even though it appears to be covered. We recommend that you take all precautions necessary at home to protect your child’s vision. If you have any questions, please email me at RDraper@cardinalcharter.org.
We are looking forward to greeting you all on Monday; let’s have a great school year!
Becky Draper, Ed.D.
Cardinal Charter Academy
I am aware that there has been some discussion regarding the importance of sending your child(ren) to school that day, and here’s why it matters to us:
School districts in North Carolina are funded through a formula that’s based on average daily membership (ADM). The state reviews our ADM for the first 20 days of school and determines our per-student funding based on that number. The higher our average membership, the more funds we receive. Since we are a smaller “district,” every day for every student is critical. Just a small variation could cost Cardinal Charter Academy much-needed dollars to support our teachers, classrooms, and our children. I hope this helps clarify why Monday (and all the other days!) are so important to us.
Please note AGAIN that we will NOT be sending home solar eclipse glasses.
Remember for the first day: EVERYONE HERE FUNDS THE YEAR!

Join us for an evening of skating with other CCA students, parents, and teachers! Our annual Skate Night at Jelly Beans in Cary is this Saturday, August 19th, from 5:15-7pm. This is a private skate event just for CCA, but everyone is welcome to stay as long as they want, even through their public skating time. We look forward to seeing everyone there! The flyer is here, and can be found in the Forms/Flyers section of the website.
We are looking forward to another great year of middle school sports! We are kicking off the school year with boys soccer and co-ed cross country for the fall season. Only students in grades 6-8 are eligible to participate in school sports.
Tryouts for both of these sports will be:
August 28 and August 29 from 3:45-5:00 (both days are mandatory).
There will be an optional boys soccer workout after school on August 22 and August 24 from 3:45-5:15 (meet in the gym at 3:45). These workouts are for 6-8 grade boys interested in trying out for the team but attendance is not required.
ATHLETES ARE TO BE PICKED UP ON TIME IN THE PARKING LOT AREA BY THE BACK ENTRANCE. THANK YOU!
Students interested in trying out for a team this fall must…
– Sign up in the gym between August 22 – August 25.
– Supply their own attire for that sport (running shoes/cleats, shin guards, socks, goalie gloves – if trying out for the position and any other necessary equipment).
– Have an up-to-date sports physical on file with the school Athletic Director before August 28 (Sports physical form attached). Physicals expire one year after the exam.
*With regard to the physical forms, most pediatricians can complete and return the form to you without an office visit if your child has had an annual physical within the previous year. However, if you are in need of a physical you can obtain one for $30 at Doctor’s Express Urgent Care in Cary.
We will offer boys & girls basketball and cheerleading in the winter as well as co-ed track & girls soccer in the spring.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at the email address below.
Also, CCA athletics has established a sponsorship with Omega Sports at Morrisville Square. Attached are two flyers for back to school deals and all CCA families receive 20% off their order.
